| Cape Town | Safety for Asian travellers Posted: Wed July 2, 2008 04:39 PM UTC
Hi, I plan to do a self drive from Cape town to a game reserve near Port Elizabeth, overnighting in Oudtshoorn, Knysna & Storms River along the way. I will travelling with my wife and 6 year old boy.
We are Chinese so can be easily identified as tourists. The fact that we are Chinese and travelling with a young child make us obvious targets. We have been hearing lots of horror stories about crimes in South Africa (Cape town included). Any opinions on safety in Cape Town, Oudtshoorn and along garden route would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance! |

Hi. I am not a South African but I think I can say with certainty that there are Asians living in South Africa. Unless you carry camera everwhere or wear lots of jewellry, you won't be obvious tourists or obvious targets. I think though that your question would be better served by someone who lives in South Africa.
I do think though that the areas you mention are safe unless you travel at night.

South Africa has a sizeable Taiwanese population, so ethnic Chinese do not necessarily stand out as tourists. I don't really think that is an issue, though. Criminals will target anyone if they have the opportunity and they perceive them to be a "soft" target. Research basic crime prevention strategies and implement them to minimise your risk of falling victim to crime.
When driving, don't leave valuables in full view of pedestrians (they may just smash the window to grab a handbag or camera); don't stop to assist "broken-down" cars or "injured" pedestrians in remote areas; travel during the day; make sure both your departure and arrival destinations are aware of your itinerary and expected arrival time; keep a safety distance between your car and the vehicle in front when stationary (so you have room to escape in an emergency); don't display obvious items of wealth on your person; remain vigilant when stopping at a traffic-controlled intersection. These are only a few safety hints, which worldly travellers may employ to safeguard themselves.

You being Chinese is irrelevant. If you follow Johan's good advice you'll be fine and I am positive you'll have a great time.

As Chinese, you will attract zero special attention unless you are wearing ethnic costumes and dragon heads! LOL
The route you are travelling is full of tourists and actually quite relaxing. When our daughter (24) travels that route we are quite relaxed as parents. There is really no need for the feeling that you will be "obvious targets" because you are a young asian family. You will only be an obvious target if you display wealth that can easily be taken from you.
