After a week NY with our kids, we start a camping trip from JFK where we hire a car. We want to buy small, basic camping equipment in de the neighourhoud of JFK. The cheaper the better, because after 3 weeks we will be obligded to leave without for Belgium....

You could always search for a campground that offers equipment rental, or one that has "permanent" tents which are already set up, and will have cots. That way you might only need sleeping bags, and maybe a light source of some type. Gary

If you are looking for cheap(er) then you will do well to look at Walmart or Target or Kohl's or any sporting goods store. These also have catalogs on-line. You might even be bale to order what you need ahead of time and pick them up upon arrival. The zip code at JFK is 11430 , so for instance if you google "target 11430" you will get several hits - good luck

After years of towing a camper trailer and then more years with a Motorhome we've started planning our camping trips by reserving Kamping Kabins at KOAs. They are inexpensive comfortable little cabins and all you need is basic cooking and serving utensils, a cooler, a cheap camping stove and Your sleeping bags/pillows.
The nice thing is that packing up does not involve taking down a tent and generaly they are very comfortable and beat sleeping on the ground. You'll really apreciate them if it rains.
