Perth Driving part day trip
Posted: Wed July 2, 2008 03:33 PM UTC
Although I've been to Perth 4 or 5 times, they've all been shortish 3 - 4 night stays. This time my brother and I are heading over there from Melbourne for my fathers 86th birthday and we're looking on taking him out for a drive for 4 to 5 hours. He really can't walk any more than say 50 metres as he's very frail, so can I please have some suggestions on where we can take him for that time with a lunch and/or afternoon tea stop on a Sunday in a few weeks time. He recently was taken down to Freeo, so we'd like to leave that one out thanks.

Any suggestions welcomed - thanks

David

4 or 5 hours seems a long trip for someone who is frail and elderly, but I presume you know that your dad can manage it.
You could down through Rockingham to Mandurah and back on that time.
Or maybe a trip into the hills and around the reservoirs.

How far is Margaret River from Perth?

I remember going there, and it was lovely...great places for lunch and some wine, full of kangaroos and the beaches down there were stunning. Could be a fun day trip? Or it might be too far as I don't remember how long the drive was!

Happy travels, Mike

What about Yanchep National Park David? They have a nice cafe there with wonderful home made soup and loads of chocies. And also a large Inn. You can hire a boat if you like. You could perhaps have morning tea there and then jump back in the car and go further up the coast to Guilderton which is right on the beach. You can also hire a boat there. Nice scenery motoring up the Moore River. Cheers, Ann :o)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Most of the time will be in the car just cruising as he's in a nursing home and just wants out of here for a while (don't blame him). The Hillaries looks like a great suggestion, although here dosnt seem to be any tips on vt for there - unless my searching was wrong. Hoevere they have their own web site - http://www.hillarysboatharbour.com.au/hillarys_location.htm

Thanks again and any more suggestions please.

David, I have tips for Hillarys on my Mullalloo page. I've also got a Yanchep, Gilderton & Pinnicles page you can look at. Let me know if you want us to meet up with you as Hillarys or Yanchep is near where I live.
Cheers.

Thanks Ann

>I have tips for Hillarys on my Mullalloo page.

Thanks found it - might be a bit of a problem with the vt search system. I tried Hillary's in the search and drew a blank. Then I tried looking in Perth - I had no idea there was a Mullalloo.

Thanks

Time is a bit of a problem as my brother and I are over here for 4 nights and want to spend he bulk of the time with dad. At 86, who knows . . .

I'm sure you understand.

Thanks again

David

Hi Take your day for a drive along the southern freeway to Mandurah, 86 km from Perth, an easy drive less than 1 hour. Then have a coffee on the Esplanade at Dome Coffee House or other, the 1 hour estuary ferry is berthed 100 metres away so you can cruise the estury and canals with the mansions, through to the new harbour, marina and fishing fleet, see the restaurants and then return to the ferry berth at Dome cafe. Then get in car and drive 5 minutes to marina and have lunch overlooking the marina. Lunch varies from $12 to $40 depending which restaurant.

Check out photos on my Mandurah page and then decide. After lunch some good drives along the Peel inlet after you cross the Dawesville Cut Bridge.

Good Luck,
Mike

I think you'll find that Mandurah is more than hour from Perth, where is estimates it as 1 1/4 and they often underestimate. But it is an easy drive, and the espelanade is lovely to sit out on if it's a fine day.

I have a holiday home in Mandurah and regularly travel there along the Freeway from Sorrento north of Perth. Once you are on the Freeway and pass the narrows bridge Perth City it is 100km hour all the way outside weekday peak morning traffic.I often travel midweek.

The railway construction has finished and the freeway reduced limit of 80km has returned to 100km.

A few nice places for a drive are YORK, TOODYAY, NORTHAM or a bit further on there is a Monastic town called NEW NORCIA.

Enjoy!,

Trish
