| Maine | Scenic drive from Boston to Portland, ME Posted: Wed July 2, 2008 04:23 AM UTC
Are there any scenic roads that run from Boston, MA to Portland or Freeport, ME?
I will be going there next week from NJ and I'd like to avoid driving on Interstate Roads. Thanks |

You are AWESOME! Thanks a lot! Are there any famous lighthouses along the way?

I'd also add maybe a side trip to Gloucester. The area's beautiful, and the drive on Route 127 west of Gloucester is just gorgeous. You could head north to Essex, then up through Ipswich and maybe even to Crane Beach, although the flies may have kicked up by then.
Be sure to spend some time in Portsmouth, NH. Really cute town, very nice Downtown area. And they have a really nice park along the waterfront called Prescott Park. In Maine, there's Ogunquit and Kennebunkport. You'll probably recognize the latter per Bush fame, but it's got a gorgeous town and a really pretty beach. Your best bet on a lighthouse is the Portland Head Light just south of Portland. It's the oldest lighthouse in Maine. Free admission and it offers wonderful views of the coast. Make sure that you enjoy your time in Portland though. It's really a wonderful city and it's easy to caught up on the back roads between and not be able to do much there. When you drive the back roads in New England, I'd strongly encourage you to bring a GPS. Roads are often unsigned or very difficult to understand. Street names change constantly, not only between towns, but often within towns themselves. It's frustrating. Also, a note: a bridge is currently out on Route 1A south of Newbury in Mass. You'll have to cut west a bit, but the detour is signed and doesn't really add time, but you do have to jump on Route 1 (less scenic) to get to Newbury.
