Los Angeles In LA for 8 days - where to stay?
Posted: Tue July 1, 2008 10:51 PM UTC
Hi,

My friends and I are traveling to the US from Australia in Dec/Jan 09.
There are 5 of us going and accommodation is difficult to find for 5 of us.

We are going to New York (We have accommodation here already)
San Fran (4 days)
Las Vegas (4 days)
Los Angeles (8 days)

Does anyone have any places that accommodate 5 people in 1 room. We are looking at probably 3 star hotels.

Another question. While in LA we are going to get a pass that allows us into Disneyland and the Rollercoaster as well as San Diego Zoo for a few days. Is it recommended that we stay in Anaheim for say 4 days to do those things and then go to LA to see everything else and stay there? (We thought that was probably easier than traveling to and from everyday).

Any help would be appreciated!

I don't know if you have a car- but the San Diego Zoo is a good drive south of L.A.- and there is a lot more to see and do in San Diego than just the zoo. Anaheim is probably your best bet for Disney- don't know about the Rollercoaster- and I find L.A. to be dirty, smoggy, disapointing, expensive, a nightmare to get around in and just not worth my time unless I'm there are business. But- you may have things you really want to do there- You might consider a couple of days in Anaheim and L.A. and then traveling south to San Diego.

I guess that means you don't like LA.

The Residence Inn chain has little suites but are probably more expensive - but you could try them off the Marriott site - or residenceinn.com - some properties could be less than others, but I'm not sure if you will find them where you need them.

As far as LA I'd stay near Santa Monica. From there you could rent bikes to go thru the beaches, and hopefully you'll visit Venice Beach too.

On your way down I-5, stop in Downey and have a meal at Arthur's (only thing I have on my Downey page) - may be the one restaurant you remember. Little tiny place - all home made breads and sausages. Everything is good!

Not sure if you're driving - but it's quite a ways from Santa Monica to Anaheim.

I'm assuming that you are planning to see the traditional LA sights in the northern part of LA county ( Hollywood, Universal Studios, Santa Monica, etc ).

In that case you are better off with 3 separate places:
One hotel in northern LA county ( Santa Monica or West Hollywood are ok )
Another in Anaheim near Disneyland
And another in San Diego.

You possibly can combine the first two - especially if you drive to Disneyland for the day, leaving about 9:30am and coming back after dinner.
But you must have separate lodging in SD. It is not a convenient day trip from LA or Anaheim to SD. If you try it you will feel like the first poster.

I don't recall a pass that covers both Disneyland and the Zoo. You can get passes that cover the SD zoo and Wild Animal Park in northern SD county.

If you want 5 people in one room you may need to rent a suite, not a room. Also, sometimes in older hotels, rooms are built with a door between adjoining rooms.

Welcome to California

Try Embassy Suites--they are all over California, including one in Anaheim. You get a 2-room suite with two queen beds plus a couch that unfolds to a bed. A free evening cocktail hour and a wonderful, filling, complete, free breakfast (not just a sweet roll and coffee) are included in the price, which really helps the budget! With 5 people this should fit your price range. They are well-appointed suites with a fridge and microwave as well. As for passes, check out the Southern Ca;lifornia City pass--www.citypass.com/city/socal.html which is the only pass that I know of and see if that helps! Good luck!

you have a pass for Disneyland and Rollercoaster so I assume you have the 3 day Disney pass for Disneyland and California Adventure. Theres a Embassy Suites down the street from Disney main gate that will take 5 people.I would stay there for the week and drive to LA for whatever you want to see its less than an hour away.Orange County is very nice and so is San Diego so you might want to spend the night in San Diego.
