| Munich | Bavaria Ticket Posted: Tue July 1, 2008 10:00 PM UTC
Hi All,
Can someone explain the Bavaria Ticket to me a little more? I understand it's 27 euro per day for up to 4 people. My boyfriend and I will be in Munich in late Oct and want to do a day trip to Salzburg. On the map, it turns from a red line to gray, and I can't translate what the key means. Is it extra, or just showing you're entering another country? Does this leave from the Hauptbahnhof station in Munich? Also, is there a Fussen connection through this? Thanks, and please excuse my lack of knowledge :) |

Salzburg is both an Austrian & German station, so your Bavaria ticket is fine. It also covers the Munich public transit system for the duration of the ticket. Fuessen is in a totally opposite direction from Salzburg. It is the home of King Ludwig II's Neuschwanstein Castle, and his boyhood home, the Hohenschwangau Castle. Gary

Lostsooner is right. You could, however, travel from Füssen to Salzburg via Munich, but that's not doable if you have only one day to go from Füssen to Salzburg an return to say: Munich.

The gray arrow just means that you are leaving the Bavarian railroad networks. > Does this leave from the Hauptbahnhof station in Munich? Yes, mostly from platform 2 if I recall correctly. Frankly, Munich Central Station sucks noodles. Come early, you'll need some time to find platform 2.

The Bavaria (Bayern) Ticket is valid for a day (as already mentioned) for up to five people from 9am to 3am of the next day (Mon - Fri) and from mignight to 3am of the next day on Sat and Sun, and you can travel criss-cross everywhere in Bavaria plus Salzburg (Austria). The only exclusion are the fast trains like ICE and IC. You can only use regional trains which can be quite a bit slower in some cases; in other cases - like Füssen - there are only regional train connections.
To travel to Salzburg and Füssen you need two days as the distances are too long to give you a realistic chance to visit both places in a day. So you have to buy a Bayern Ticket for each trip. But theoretically you could get onto a train at 9am, change as many times as you please, and travel, travel the whole day on that ticket as long as you travel in Bavaria, travel three times to Salzburg and back... The ticket is not bound to lines but to the whole region of Bavaria.

It nearly caught me out, sort of out the back and away from what look like the main lines and a bit of a hike to be running for a train. The good news is that there are quite a few at regular times.

Thank you all for the advice! It looks like we'll have 3 days in Munich, so will spend 1 in Munich (have an extra night for the Hoffbrauhaus!), 1 traveling to Salzburg, and 1 traveling to Fussen. I can't wait!

A web site that should be very helpful for you if you are visiting the castles: www.hohenschwangau.de. It has links for ticketing, tranportation, and many others. You can switch the page to English. There is a British flag on the left side of the page about 2/3 of the way down. Gary

lol, sucks noodles is correct. My wife and I came close to missing a train because as many times as we have been through that station, we did not know there were outdoor platforms out back. Don't be afraid to ask where the platform is if you are not sure.
