San Francisco Smoke

Is the smoke bad enough in the San Francisco area to cancel a vacation the week of July 6?

You might want to take note of the following web site: www.weather.gov/alerts/ca.html. Right now, most of the problems seem to be centered in the Russian River/ Mendicino County areas, which are quite a bit north of San Francisco. San Francisco very rarely has winds of any velocity from the north so you should be fine. Gary

It's very unusual for the air in SF to be still enough for smoke to be noticeable. The cool wind currents from the sea keep things moving and only in very rare circumstances would the air be dirty.

In all honesty. I would rather see San Francisco on a smokey day, than probably 95 per cent of the rest of the world. Please don't just become fixated on the Wharf though. Gary

The North Beach area, and the northern waterfront, (other than the Wharf), are probably my favorite areas. The North Beach sits between the Wharf, and Chinatown. There are a lot of restaurants, Washington Square is in the area, as are the City Lights Bookstore. the Sentinel Building, and a very nice jazz club, JazzatPearls. For the waterfront, the Ferry Building has been refurbished. You can travel over to Marin County from there. There is the Hyde Street Pier, which has several restored sailing vessels. It is also the northern end of one of the cable car lines. There are a WWII liberty ship, the Jeremiah O'Brien, and submarine, the Pampanito. Fort Mason has several small museums. You can have a picnic at the Marina Green, visit the Exploratorium, and the Palace of Fine Arts, the Presdio, Fort Point, and the Golden Gate Bridge. You can rent bikes at one of the piers for this trip, or you can also walk along the waterfront. Gary

If you have an interest in music, the Fillmore Jazz Fesrival is being held on the 5th and 6th of July. It is one of the largest musical events on the west coast. They actually close down several streets and have food and crafts as well as the music. Their web site: www.fillmorejazzfestival.com. A site that might be helpful for you: http://sanfrancisco.menupages.com. It lists restaurants by cuisine, and by neighborhood among other things. Another good sight for concerts, festivals, etc, is: www.whatsonwhen.com. This site has world-wide coverage so you could use it for other trips as well. Gary
