Hi!first of all..are you James hess?because your face look familiar to some one I knew.About buenos ires,or argentina people..they are very good people and can be trusted.Just don't let your apartment staff know what 's inside.I think they won't bother your package.

Frankly I would hesitate to send anything to Argentina that would depend on Correo Argentino to deliver it. I have sent and had mailed to me several things and about 1/2 never made it. There was no pattern either. One package with a DVD of a family birthday party never made it. Another with three movie DVD's and a couple books were delivered right to my apartment 5 days after being mailed from NYC. Another package from LA was held up and I had to go to the central post office near the Retiro to claim it. Took three hours to finally be called back, they opened the package to make sure no duty was due and closed it up and I was on my way. If you can have it sent DHL or FedEx, DHL has a much larger presence in Argentina. Regardless, the person sending it will have to fill out customs declarations, (you cannot avoid listing the contents) so be sure and have it insured for the market value of the items just in case.

If you're really worried then why not ask to deposit it at a bank. It could be sent there direct and then you could have it placed in a safe-box.

Otherwise, most reasonable hotels ( I stayed at the Intercontinental, if I remember correctly) have a good safe.

Does this help?

Maybe you should look for something like FedEx, which will let you know that they have the box and you can go for it.

If this is really jewelry of value and the Customs' declaration acompanying it says it is, then you have no worries. You are going to get to go to the Aduana branch at Correo Central to haggle over whether duty (arranceles) is due on the item/s. Until that matter is cleared up your jewlery will stay parked and more or less guarded. I think if you ask DHL7Fedex about their procedures in detail you'll find that they can't deliver items of that type past Aduana either. If you choose not to declare what it really is, there goes the insurance. So, I think you should worry more about how much duty you'll have to pay. Customs officers are neaarly universally quite slow to accept that something of high value is: used; a family heirloom; or otherwise exempt. Que luzcas bien.
