| New York City | bus transportation to Battery Park Posted: Mon June 30, 2008 04:27 PM UTC
Hi
I'm taking my granddaughter to visit the Statute of Liberty and Ellis Island soon. We'll arrive at Grand Central Station and I'd like to use the buses to arrive at Battery Park to catch the Ferry. Can you tell me what bus service is available? Thank you so much for your help. |

Walk out to Park Ave and then down to 40th St. The M1 bus stops there and is marked 'South Ferry' and will take you straight to Battery Park (State Street).

You'd be better off taking the fast subway to the South Ferry station near Battery Park. From Grand Central you can either walk to the west side following West 42nd Street (a good 10 - 15 mins. walk) and catch the IRT Local to South Ferry or you can catch the shuttle train from Grand Central to Times Square (West 42nd Street) station and connect to the the IRT local which is the number 1 subway train all the way to South Ferry.
The bus will will set you back with much delay taking into account the city's horrendous traffic situation.

The quickest route from Grand Central Terminal is to take the Downtown #4 or #5 express subway. It's five quick stops to the Bowling Green station, and a short walk from there over to the Statue of Liberty ferries.
A word of caution: if you're traveling on weekends, check the MTA's web site for re-routed subway lines. They do lots of construction on weekends, and it can get confusing. http://www.mta.info/nyct/subway/index.html

Take the 4 or 5 train instead to Bowling Green. Leave early as the Statue of Liberty and Ellis trip are popular and very crowded.
