| Montevideo | Questions about Montevideo Posted: Mon June 30, 2008 03:03 PM UTC
I am thinking of taking a year and living in Montevideo, but visiting first.
1. To live there, what is the rent in a nice area cost ? 2. What are utilities, internet etc cost ? 3. What are the positives & negatives about Montevideo ? Please advise about anything and everything, thanks so much. Larry |

Hi,
I'll try to answer your questions. 1- I'd suggest Pocitos area. A rent would cost about usd 300-400. It may vary depending on location (sea view for example), services (central heat, etc.). 2- Internet: you have different options dependind on bandwidht or time, etc. The cheaper is usd 15 a month and rises to USD 200/month (high speed, business purposes). You can check these ADSL fares on www.antel.com.uy. Another utilities (phone, electricity, etc.) depends on consumption but you can estimate between usd 25 and 50/month. 3- Pros: quiet, small, peacefull, the sea. It has everything a big city has but in a small package. Cons: Public transport, transit. I saw in another post that you are asking the same about BA. I would never live in BA unless neccesary. It's a nice city to go and visit but I can't stand a week there, it's too stressfull. Good luck, Rafa

Wow, that was good info, thanks...300 to 400 USD...That would be great, and I can study spanish and not really hold a job, well, maybe something part time.
How is the tourist industry there ? Are there a lot of bed and breakfasts and small inns ?

Those prices quoted seem to be a bit on the low side, keep in mind the dollar is still tanking. Pocitos is a nice area particularly if you are bringing a family, for a single guy, it can be pretty boring. Montevideo is a pretty small city, there is not that much to see. There are some clubs, gambling casinos, I never really found a good restuarant, don't get me wrong, the food can be decent, they don't use many spices or marinates. I've got some recent video & photos I can send you to help you judge for yourself. There is no better way to decide than to just go for a few weeks. We both live in Northern NJ so I think we are on the same page.
Regards Carlos
