| London | Travel Cards Posted: Mon June 30, 2008 10:14 AM UTC
Hi
Do we need Photos for use with a 3 day travelcard and would we need to ask for a Zone 5 3 day pass or do they cover all zones any ideas on prices would be good too Do we need an Off Peak card for Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon or is it Peak Time during Friday 15:00(arrive Victoria Coach Station) and 19:00 ( need to leave hotel paddington area) TIA Julie PS I am more worried about coming to my own Capital City than i have been on any of the other journeys to Cities abroad - ( maybe because i am always seeing bad news from there and i don't see so much from other place) Anybody else out there have the same feelings |

The 3-day travelcard I bought didn't have any space for photos.
I bought an off peak 3-day travelcard at www.visitbritain.se. The card I chose was valid on all 6 zones because it was convenient to me to have access to LHR without worrying about prices. Peak time is considered to be "from 0930 Mondays to Fridays, all day Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, on the day of validity and for any journey that starts before 0430 on the following day" (taken from tfl.gov.uk). Read about prices at http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/faresandtickets/onea

You do not need a photo for a 3 day travelcard. If you are arriving after 9:30 am on Friday and leaving on Sunday, your travel will all be off peak but it doesn't really matter as there doesn't appear to be a 3 day off peak travelcard for zone 1-2 although there is for zone 1-6.
Is there a reason why you think you need a zone 1-6? Unless you are going out to the airport or visiting someplace well outside the center, a zone 1-2 should be OK. The only places I've been outside zone 1-2 are Kew Gardens, Wimbledon, the ExCel Center and Heathrow. You can see a tube map here with the zones on it http://www.tfl.gov.uk/gettingaround/1106.aspx

No photos needed.
You can get travelcards at any Tube station, from machines or from the ticket office. Just go to the one at Victoria. There is a nice fare/zone/peak/off-peak comparison table here: http://www.ukstudentlife.com/Travel/Transport/Lond and here: http://www.londontoolkit.com/briefing/travelcard.htm Off-peak cards can only be used after 9.30am, except on Saturday and Sunday when they can be used all day. Do you really need zone 5 coverage? Check where you intend to go before you pay out the extra: most people are ok with just zones 1 and 2.

Of course there are many stories of teenage gangs tooled up and taking pot shots at each other in London. You are never far away from a drama in a city of seven million. But I can tell you that this is exceptional, generally it is quite safe, especially in the tourist areas.
Now Barnsley on Saturday night, that is another matter....

hi guys
the reason i asked about all zones is we are off up to twickenham on the saturday for the iron maiden concert and hav eread about people being caught out with only zone 4 cards - and being fined - well i assume the fine will be more than the cost of the all zones card in the first place so was just edging my bets as if any one will get tugged - it will be us Film Dunno about Barnsley on a Saturday - its been a while since i was out there - but i assume its still "fun" Murder and mayhem happens all over the place

Since you are traveling outside of zone 1-2, it's only slightly more expensive to get a zone 1-6 off peak 3 day travelcard, I don't know about the stations that are further out but it seems you can't get out of the ones in central London without a valid ticket as there are barriers.
And if memory serves me, if you are taking the bus, the zone 1-2 card is valid on all buses even outside of central London.

Agreed. Worst case scenario you buy a single ticket if you *need* to travel under peak hours, right?
