| Florence | Piazza Santa Croce Posted: Mon June 30, 2008 09:23 AM UTC
Hi
Iam going to Florence in October and have rented an apartment in Piazza S. Croce, in front of the Basilica of S.Croce. Can anyone please tell me how far it is from the SMN railway station, and whether the distance is walkable. Many thanks. |

From my experience I would say it is about 15 to 20 minutes away by foot (depends if you are pulling luggage over the cobblestones) Florence is well signposted so you wont get lost. Make sure you spend at least an hour or two inside the Basilica. It is my favorite church in Florence, maybe Europe, and I never tire of wandering about. The Piazza is pretty touristy, as is all of Florence I suppose, but you will love it. I'm rather jealous right now. LOL.

The distance is walkable and you`ll see a few nice places on your way. Head towards the Duomo then go right towards Piazza Signoria. Cut across the square to your left and keeping David on your right head alongside the Palazzo Vecchio and before you know it you`re there! The only traffic is between the station and the Duomo. Fifteen to twenty minutes is a good guess. :-)

I stayed near Santa Croce when I was in Venice also. I walked from the station. It was about a twenty minute walk. I found the busses to be very crowded and so it was easier to walk with the luggage than to try and drag them on the crowded bus.

Compare the 15-20 minute walk on cobblestones, probably with luggage with the 12 euro fare for a taxi. Karl

Hello, I agree with Swiss Fondue: The distance is walkable, but how much luggage will you be toting? I believe it to be a 20 to 30 minute walk from SMN train station. A taxi ride will cost at least 15 euros. At that rate, I would walk it if possible and enjoy the beauty that is Florence. We were there in March, and had a wonderful time. Make sure you have reserved tickets for The David and Uffizi Gallery or you will wait in a very long line, especially during the summer. Buono Viaggio!

I don't know how much luggage you have, or what time you will arrive [more people on the buses if it's rush hour], but you could also take the #14 bus.
The #14 bus goes from the left side of the station [left, when facing the front of the station] and passes by within 2 blocks of Piazza Santa Croce. It costs €1.20 I think you have to buy bus tickets in the station...at the tabacchi stand that is right across from the trains http://www.ataf.net/System/mappe/Ataf_tav_001.pdf
