Vienna What are best days of week to visit?
Posted: Sun June 29, 2008 11:52 PM UTC
We're planning a Prague-Vienna trip for August. We'll have nine days total from Aug. 8-16 with five (flexible) dates already booked at the Prague Marriott. We want to take the train down to Vienna for 2-3 days, but want to make sure the museums and other attractions we want to see aren't closed when we're there. Are the museums typically closed Sunday and Monday in Vienna, like they are in some other Euro cities?

I was in Vienna on a Sunday and Monday last June and if there was anything closed, I certainly didn't find it. All the popular must sees were open and running at full strength. Enjoy Wien!

I don't have an answer for your question but thought I'd mention that you should check when you get your train ticket in Prague about how much a return ticket is, I found that it was 33E from Prague-Vienna but 49E from Vienna-Prague, I suspect I could have saved a few Euro if I had booked the whole thing in Prague but not sure. Everyone told me I could wait and purchase tickets when I got to Prague instead of prebooking the very expensive Rail Europe tickets, we purchased a day in advance with no problem. The SC trains require a reservation (an additionl 7E), not sure about the others.

I suggest checking the websites for those places you want to visit, a quick check shows that Schonbrunn is open every day for example/

Two weeks ago my son went to the Albertina on a Tuesday, only to realize that one of the exhibitions he had planned to see was closed on Tuesdays. Some other exhibitions were open.My daughter went there on a Sunday and it was open.
It's best to check the websites for each museum you want to visit.

I remember spending Aug. 15 in Vienna once. It was a religious holiday (Feast of the Assumption) and most of the shops were closed.

Assumption Day is August 15th this year. As previous posters have suggested, it is probably best to check individual web sites for the venues you wish to visit. You also might wish to check the web sites for transport entities you wish to use on that date. Sometimes there are curtailed holiday schedules. You might wish to look at information for the V

What I was going to say is check the following web site for the Vienna Card: www.wien.info/article.asp?IDArticle=9400. This card costs 18.50 Euro. It provvides free transport for 72 hours by bus, tram, and the underground system. It provides dicounts on admission to more transport options, but more importantly, to many of the museums, and local events. There is a similar card for Prague as well. Gary

Lotsooner has already given you a good advice; check the individual sites of the museums you would like to visit. In general everything is open Wednesday-Saturday, but again, 15th of August is a public holiday and all shops are closed and most probably some museums too. The bigger museums are, as a rule of thumb, always open, but it is quite common that they are closed either weekends, Sunday and Monday, or Tuesday. It varies a lot.

If you look at the list of the venues, etc, covered by the Vienna Card, that actually gives you a fairly complete list of the museums and other attractions in the city. You can then visit the web sites for those that interest you, and/or post a question in the VT forums for further feedback. Gary

Another web site that I find helpful is: www.whatsonwhen.com. It lists exhibits, festivals, concerts, etc, for a city that sometimes the local tourist bureau don't even mention. There are cities listed world-wide, so you can also view it for Prague, and for future travels, as well. Gary

I hope you enjoy your vacation. Prague is very close to the top of my "must see" list. Anywhere is Austria has always been enjoyable for me. Gary
