Switzerland Does US permanent residents (not citizens) require visa to visit Switzerland?
Posted: Sun June 29, 2008 07:04 PM UTC
Hello all,
As I am planning for Switzerland trip, I have few immigration questions. We are family of 4 (2 adults and 2 kids 8 years and 2 years)
1.Does US permanent residents (not citizens) require visa?
2.Does US citizens require visa?
3.How easy and how long it will take to get a visa to France while I am in Switzerland?
4.What is a good website to know these immigration details?

Any help would be appreciated.

US citizens don't need a visa for Switzerland.

As far as I know, Switzerland is only interested in what kind of passport you have, not where you can live permanently. So it depends on your nationality if you need a visa.

There is no France visa, it's a Schengen visa and it has to be applied for from your homecountry.

A good website: Check with the consulates for special visa questions.

Actually Switzerland does take into account place of residence in determining whether you need a visa, for example some non-EU citizens with a residence card from an EU/EEA country do not need a visa when they would have done if arriving directly from their country of origin. Thus, "Passport holders of Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Democratic republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, India, Iran, Lebanon, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka and Turkey require a transit visa UNLESS they hold a visa or a residence permit for an EU country, Norway, Iceland, Canada, or USA or travel on a diplomatic, service or special passport." However, Stateless persons always need a visa.
If you require a visa for France (that is, Schengen), which will depend on your nationality not the fact that you reside in the USA, you should apply in your country of residence before you leave, not wait until you get to Switzerland. In many countries visas can only be issued to people who are resident in the country concerned, and if the French Embassy in Switzerland WILL issue them to someone in transit it is likely to be more expensive.
I would suggest you phone the Swiss and French Embassies in Washington or nearest consulate to where you live.

Just remeber that the Switzerland has joined the Schengen agreement, and this will come in force soon. Depending on when you might intend to visit all you may need is a Schengen Visa.

Thank you all for your replies.

Since me and my wife have India passports and my kids have US passports and point of Schengen visa for Switzerland, I might have to talk to Switzerland embassy in India to avoid any last minute surprises.
