| Austria | Travelling between Salzburg to Munich and from Munich to Vienna? Posted: Sun June 29, 2008 04:44 PM UTC
My wife and I want to visit Austria in late August and pop over to Munich, Germany for a couple days (from salzburg) and then head back to vienna from munich to catch our flight home. I think we've pretty much figured out hat for our inter-austria travel the austria rail pass (at $88 per person) would be cheapest but what is the most economical way to get from Salzburg to Munich and then from Munich to Vienna?
or is there a better way altogether? We want to see Hallstatt, Salzburg, Vienna and Munich. |

Have a look at:
http://www.bahn.de/p/view/international/englisch/i for all European train timetables and fares for journeys originating in Germany. And check the Austrian railway site: http://www.oebb.at/en/ for Austrian-origin fares. Buses may be cheaper, if available, but are likely to take longer than the trains.

Salzburg is considered both an Austrian and German station. You can go to the www.bahn.de web site that Leics has referenced, and look at the links for "lander tickets", and "happy weekend tickets" to see if one of those fares would meet your needs. They are cheap, and they cover the Munich transit system as well. There is also a Lufthansa airport shuttle from the Salzburg airport to the Munich airport. It is fairly expensive. The web site: www.lufthansa-airportbus.com/strecken_innsbruck.html. It does list the Salzburg-Munich connections regardless of the Innsbruck reference. Gary

The Bavaria Ticket will cover you from Salzburg to Munich, Euro 27 for up to 5 people, the conditions of use are : no IC or EC trains, travel after 9a.m. on a weekday or anytime on a weekend until 3a.m. the next day. The trains most commonly encountered on this route are regional anyway, which is what you need and there is a train I think, every hour. As Salzburg is right on the German-Austrian border train-wise the Bavaria ticket is allowed. This ticket can also be used on public transport in Munich so if you went there in the morning you could carry on seeing stuff for the rest of the day, the train trip is about 1 1/2 hours.
