Bratislava CURRENCY
Posted: Sat June 28, 2008 02:28 PM UTC
Hi

We're hopping to Bratislava from Vienna - plan to spend no more than a day there. Are Euros widely accepted please - or do we need local currency

Thanks

Euros are accepted in cities close to the border, such as Bratislava, however not neccessarily "widely".
It's a good idea to bring a credit card (and your EC card if you happen to be from Europe and have one), though.

If you want to chance money in Slovakia, please note that you need to show your ID card or passport.

I have a sneaky feeling that the country is going to change to the euro in the very near future. Can't remember exactly when but it is soon. There will be a change over period when both currencies will be accepted but it is very short, about two months.

Trust your feelings. Slovakia will introduce the common currency in January 2009.

Euros are accepted in bigger shops like Tesco, but usually only if the amount to be paid is more than 50 EUR, exchange rates are often worse than in bank and you will get the change in Slovak crowns. I am not sure about entrance to some tourist attractions, but credit cards are accepted virtually everywhere. If you are coming on a working day, you can leave it on a moment you will realize you really need crowns and go into the nearest bank - there are plenty of them downtown.
