If you are taking a cruise it is the best to sign up for a local guided sightseeing tour through the cruise company. Istanbul is huge city, it will take you an hour to go to the old Byzantine center. Most streets in the old section are closed for cars

It is also a crazy overcrowded place

Probably tram. It runs close to terminal. It will take you across the Galata bridge (at Golden Horn) and up into Sultanahmet (the old town). You can get off right at the Blue Mosque/Topkapi/Ayai Sofia/Grand Bazaar. You won't see all of these in 8 hours!

You can walk around the old town.

For the tram you buy a token (jeton in Turkish) from a kiosk at the stop, then put it in a turnstile for entry. Trams are modern and air conditioned.

Istanbul is a very safe and interesting place, ideal for walking. Taxis are very cheap, but haggle and agree a price before you start. You did do a better deal in US Dollars and Euros, but expect to get any change in a mixture of currencies, including Lire.

Bumping IAINT, I'll also opt for the tram, from the ferry pier, you can take the tram, from Karakoy (ferry dock), Sultanahmet (historical centre) is the 4th tram station. Tram ride is fun, you will have the local feel.

But 6 of you? Take the more convenient taxi and not really expensive, Karakoy to Sultanahmet may just be less than YTL10 bec from Taksim which is 2X as far as Karakoy to Sultanhmet cost already YTL10. But there are 6 of you so the driver might really ask for YTL10, but not more than that. I would have suggested walking but you only have 8 hours.

Yes, you can walk around the area called Sultanahmet (Blue MOsque & the Hippodrome, Hagia Sophia, Basilica Cistern) but you really have a limited time, so go for the ones that don't have a long queue, Blue Mosque perhaps is the first and foremost, most of all - it's free!

You may want to see how to enjoy Sultanahmet in 1 Day, I posted it here:

Have fun!
