What is the best way to get to Komodo island in the winter (Nov/Dec) from Bali, or any places in Indonesia in general ? How is the sea in that time frame ? Calm or rough ? Can it be done by independent traveling or it is needed to go through the local tour agency ? Thanks.

I believe you cannot go to Komodo without a guide or tour.
The lizards are extremely dangerous.

As far as I know, you are not allowed to walk around the island without being accompanied by armed rangers. As Ricky says, those lizards are not to be messed with!

I never go to Komodo island, do hope this short information would be a helpfull. From Bali Ngurah Ray airport take a flight to LABUAN BAJO at Flores island, then take a land transportation to deliver you to the Labuan Bajo Seaport from where you could take a Ferry or speed boat bound for Komodo island. November and December is in a rainy season, sometime it was a hard rain, but you can check the weather forcast before trip. Ya you could be done traveling independently, but after you reach Komodo island you need a guide tour, please contact a local tourist information board at Labuan Bajo or at Komodo island. Beside air trip to Labuan Bajo, you can go overland to Labuhan Sape before take ferry to Komodo Island. Take bus to Bima from Bali (the journey take 2 days), then from Bima you take another bus to Labuhan Sape (1-2 hours).

In Sape you wait for the ferry to Labuan Bajo which stop at Komodo Island. The ship depart every 2 days, because the sea journey will take 8 hours.

November and December is the monsoon season for that area, and sometimes the sea is rough at that time. Normally, when the weather is bad harbourmaster will delay the journey until the condition safe.
