Andalucía Driving Malaga to Lisbon
Posted: Fri June 27, 2008 08:02 PM UTC
Hi,
I will be driving from Malaga to Lisbon in the first week of July with my family (kids 3 and 11)...can anyone tell me what the roads are like and what stops are along the way? Is it a major highway, or little roads? I have heard the roads as winding and can be dangerous at points with hills and low visibility? Is that true? Thanks for all your help...much appreciated. If driving is not the way, is there a train or bus?

There is a ALSA bus that leaves Malaga bus station at 9pm and arrives at Lisbon at 6 .15 the following morning.
http://www.alsa.es/
The bus follows the route from Malaga down to Algeciras then back up inland to Jerez onto Seville, then west to the Algarve (Faro) then up through Portugal.
This is a good easy drive road. Better to leave Malaga and go direct up to Seville using the A92 then skirt around Seville and instead of using the motorway to the Algarve turn north and follow the directions shown on www.viamichelin.com
They calculate the drive takes 7 hours NON STOP !
Roads these days are excllent throughout espeically the 'autopistas' - motorways. perhaps the best place to stop is roughly half way in the Sierra de Aracena - north west of Seville. Seville will be hot.
Or stick to the motorway between Seville and Faro and stop on the sea somewhere either in Algarve or somewhere like or near Ayamonte.

No train does this route.
the next best thing is to examine flying?

winding roads? little? From Malaga the best route is to go to Sevilla (highway 2 hours), then to Huelva and cross the fronter to Algarce (another 2 hours) Follow the main highway for around 80 km till the conexion to the main highway to Lisbon (toll one, but prices were reasonable)

Check viamichelin.com

We did it two summers ago and we go often to Algarve, so if you have any questions, just let me know :-)

Have a great trip!

Sometimes flights are cheaper www.skyscanner.net
trains (you have to go to madrid, so it get s more expensive) www.renfe.es
buses check movelia.es (they may redirect you also to Sevilla ro Madrid)
