Fairbanks Viewing the Aurora from Fairbanks area
Posted: Fri June 27, 2008 04:45 PM UTC
We are planning a trip to Fairbanks to view the Aurora. This has been a long-time wish for my wife, and we want it to be memorable, if possible. We are focusing on the new moon phase in February or March next year. I have looked at the Bettles Lodge web site and was interested in any comments someone might have about that location, or others, that would give us the best viewing opportunity. We have reviewed the Fairbanks/Alaska brochures, but we would also like your first-hand opinion on events in the Fairbanks area that time of year. Should we try to visit Anchorage, for example? We are thinking about staying for ten days to two weeks.
Thanks for your help!

I haven't been to the Bettles Lodge so i can't comment on it. I have been to Chena Hot Springs several times and really enjoyed it. Rustic but comfortable with excellent food and a cozy bar. They have gotten very busy with Japanese tours in the winter. An easy hour's drive NE of fairbanks.

Can't comment on Bettles as I haven't been there, but if your looking for things to do in Fairbanks in March you need to check out the Ice sculpture park. Some very amazing sculptures.

As for seeing auroras, just remember that there are no guarentees. But for the best odds you need to get out of the cities so maybe Bettles would be a good bet. We tried Chena hot springs but only got a small, not very impressive display (just enough to make us want to go back). If you do want to go to Chena I'd suggest day trip as they are good at ripping you off if you stay there (only one restaruant to eat at so if you want to eat, you have to eat there). The restaurant / bar is nice but expensive. I would definatley suggest a relax in the hot springs though, its a great experience.
