| Rome | From Rome to Palermo Posted: Fri June 27, 2008 03:21 PM UTC
Hello everybody,
We plan to visit Rome in September and then go to Sicily. Who knows what is the best way to get to Palermo from Rome. Thanks in advance for your reply. |

there are two ways, you can fly or take the train.
The flight takes about 1h to 1h 30min. I flew with Alitalia in June and it cost me about 250 euro (I booked it the week before so I probably didn't get the best price) for that leg of the journey. www.alitalia.it. I've never taken the train from rome to Palermo but the ride is about 10-12 hours. and it costs about 40 euros. www.trenitalia.com. Best Regards Arnar

It's a matter of cost versus time taken: your choice.
http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html will give you train timetables and fares (click cart icon) in English. One-way second-class fare is about 58 euros: substantially less than a flight will cost. Journey time as stated above, mostly with changes though there are some direct trains. If you do decide to fly, book tickets as soon as you can for cheapest fares.

I flew into Palermo (from Venice) which was pretty cool if you have a window seat because all I could see was water until just before we landed. After Palermo I took the train to Naples (about 9 hours so add another hour and a half to get to Rome past Naples). It was kind of a long train ride, but I have to say it was really cool and worth the length because the entire train is ferried across the sea between Sicily and Calabria in the bottom of a boat. You're able to get off the train to go up and stand on the deck of the boat. It really did make the long train ride completely worth it.

I flew from Rome to Sicily and returned by train. The train was delayed getting on and off the ferry and we had quite a wait. The train trip was very long and I felt that the airfare was certainly worth the money, especially if you want to make the most of your time in Italy.

You might check out a ferry service. I don't know the exact time frame, but there is an overnight ferry - you could sleep all the way.
