| Vancouver | The Rocky Mountaineer Train Journey Posted: Fri June 27, 2008 02:08 PM UTC
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had been on a Rocky Montaineer train journey? If so what was it worth the money do you think as it seems quite expensive. The scenery and nature looks like it could be amazing though. Here is the link to the trip I am thinking of doing.(Vancouver to Calgary) http://www.rockymountaineer.com/vacation_packages/ Cheers |

Very very nice upscale trip, if you can afford it take it, and if you can really afford it take the Dome car, great experience.

it is a fabulous trip if you can afford it...
via rail is another choice but you'd want to do it early summer since stupid via goes through a nice part of the mountains during the night. renting a car is the best choice in my opinion. then you can stop whenever you want.

Hi, cheers for your replies.
Yes the 2 day red leaf trip from Vancouver to Calgary looks good, but between June 1 and September 30 costs $989 plus GST. Its cheaper to go the first 2 weeks in October ($839 plus GST) but would it be likely to be impassable due to snow etc by then do you think?

Hi, We spent over 4 weeks in Canada June /July 2007, five weeks if you include our cruise to Alaska.
The highlight for me was the 8 days we spent in the Rockies with our main base being Banff and overnight stays in Jasper and Canmore. We flew into Calgary, picked up rental car and were in Canmore 1.5 hours later, a beautiful small town, cold on 16th June. The next morning we took the 30 minute drive to Banff and our 7 night time share exchange in a good quality resort within the Banff National Par. The next 7 days were unbelievable( we live in Australia), canyons, forest, wild animals, gorges, torrents of water, high snow capped mountains etc etc. The glaciers, you can walk on them. Essential you have a hire car to get around, roads are good. We then took the 2 day Rocky Mountaineer Gold Leaf, that is the upstairs seated carriage and you go downstairs for your breakfast, morning tea, lunch and free drinks with meals if you want. 5 star treatment and meals, overnight at average hotel in Kamloops, at Australian dollars $2,040 per person, overpriced, but it was for my wife's 60th birthday, the women love it. However does not compare with being in the rockies. Plenty of photos on my pages, hope it helps make up your mind. Other Canadian destinations I have put up are Vancouver, Victoria, Ottawa, Quebec, Montreal and more currently in progress. Whatever you do you will have a great time. Good Luck, Mike
