| Calabria | Canadian trying to get to Tropea and Reggio di Calabria :-) Posted: Fri June 27, 2008 04:13 AM UTC
Ciao all,
I'm a young Canadian female who will be traveling throughout Southern Italy in mid-September. I'm wondering what is the safest way to get from the Atrani/Sorrento area to Tropea for a couple nights stay in what looks like paradise. :-) I'm completely open to buses/trains and transferring, even ferries if anyone knows of ways. I tried Trenitalia but everytime I tried to find out the different regions, I keep getting to the Italian website :S Also, if any of you know the best way to get from Tropea to Reggio di Calabria, it would be much appreciated! Thanks and greetings from Canada. :-) |

We drove but I'm nearly positive there's a train from Tropea to Reggio di Calabria. I agree with you; the trenitalia web site is a nuisance. Try http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html
If that doesn't work (and it usually doesn't for me), try http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en We often take the bus in Italy. It's perfectly safe and comfortable. You could check the SITA web site. http://www.sitabus.it Good luck and have fun.

works for me. But you have to put in 'Naples'. It won't work for Sorrento, because the train line to Sorrento (and some others adjoining) is privately owned and not included on the Trenitalia site. Circumvesuviana trains take about an hour to get to Naples, are cheap and frequent. Timetables here: http://www.vesuviana.it/Reteeorari/Ferrovia/Orario You could also get a bus to Naples, but the train is quick and easy. Napoli Centrale to Tropea takes around 5 hours. There are other trains from other Naples stations, but the Circumvesuviana line terminates at Napoli Centrale so you'd need to get an onward connection. The bahn.de site is good too, but won't give you the Sorrento/area link.

Ah leics, I knew you would come through. Thanks so much. Since we travel mostly by car, I'm not familiar with trains and buses. We do take the bus occasionally but always get info locally when we want to do so.
Great information.

Thanks..it took me quite a while to dig up the trains/buses around Sorrento.
But as I was visiting there, and never use a car, I had to pursue the matter thoroughly! :-)

greetings from california, you are going to paradise. I drove from sorrento south to visit family in calabria its a nice, easy drive in sept. there will not be much traffic tropea is not to far from reggio and easy to find.I find the trains to be slow in italy.maybe it was about a 4 hour drive to reggio with a couple of stops. good luck!
