One of the tips I read is that you need around 80 RMB when you leave to pay the airport tax. Is this still the case?

airport tax is 50 RMB, fuel surcharge is 100 RMB.

now, is that when you leave China, or just when you leave Beijing? I'm flying Shanghai->Beijing, spend a few days in Beijing, then return to Shanghai for a day before my trip home.

Aren't the taxes paid when you purchase the ticket?
I've been to China four times in the last few months and never paid anything at the aiport.

all airport tax are now included in the tickets. In the old days you have to fight a few hundred people to purchase airport tax at the airport counter but now this is no longer required.

No need, all airport taxes are already included in the ticket price when you buy.
