Rome Accommodation Query for My Mum & Me
Posted: Fri June 27, 2008 12:25 AM UTC
Hi there,

I'm taking my mum to Rome in July. Can anyone recommend a b&b or hotel with a decent sized twin room please? Ideally looking for a place that is centrally located, clean, has a bit of character and most importantly mum friendly! Budget is 110 euros max, but cheaper would be better as the Euro is quite strong at the moment.

Look forward to seeing your responses. In the meantime, I'm going to look for my passport!

Thanks

Mei

I can't speak highly enough of the Hotel Italia on the Via Venezie off the Via Nazionale. It is within walking distance to most of the sights and is only a 5-10 minute walk from Termini Station. The metro is a lot closer at Republicca.
I paid 90 euro for a single last June, so I don't know what price you'd pay in July. A reasonable breakfast is included in the price. The rooms are spotless, with air conditioning an optional extra. The staff all speak excellent English and are extremely helpful and efficient. My room was quite small, though plenty big enough for me. Hotel rooms in most of Europe are small, especially the cheaper ones. I did happen to see inside a room which was accommodating three people and it seemed big enough. Google "Hotel Italia, Rome" to get more details. Can be booked on bookings.com and I think venere.com. BTW there is loads of "character" and an excellent restaurant next door, not to mention a great gelati shop at the end of the street.

I'd recommend looking at www.venere.com. It's probably the best site for booking in Italy, and their reviews are more trustworthy than some other websites, because only folks who book through the site can leave a review.

For Rome, I often recommend the Hotel Aberdeen, within walking distance of the train station, spotless, recently renovated, and though some rooms are quite small (like so many Rome hotels) it is very reasonably price.

You can book them on venere.

I too highly recommend Venere, and always use it when I can. It lists hotels, b&bs and apartments and its guest reviews are honest and helpful.

Have a look at www.domushotel.com I consider it to be a real find in Rome: absolutely pristine, quiet, good breakfast, extremely convenient position and really pleasant staff. My friend and I stayed there in March and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's listed on Venere too.

Several years ago I stayed at this B&B called RICCHI'S B&B which is close to the vatican.... maybe not central enough but the location was nice and safe, well communicated, and the place was run by an old lady (at least it was back then) so maybe your mum will like that. She used to serve a simple but good breakfast for us every morning and was a kind person, although she only speaks italian. The premises were ok, a bit small but you don't need a big room if you're only going to spend the night there, and you didn't have to climb a lot of stairs to reach her place. So maybe it can be a good option and well below your max budget (or at least it was when I last went there, maybe you can find it listed in the websites they already recommended and see what her current rates are).

Good luck.

I stayed at Lazzari Hotel in central Rome. Very close to the Termini. EUR70/night on twin sharing. Great value for money.

Oops, it's me again. I stayed in a room with two single beds but I paid EUR70/night. I think that's the rate as well even if there are two of you to occupy the room. I don't know how much the price drops after Summer.

Hi all,

Thanks for the tips. I'm heading out tomorrow and have booked at the Yes Hotel, which is near Termini. A bit main stream, modern and pricier than I was hoping to pay - but hopefully my mum will like it. Fingers crossed it will be okay. I'm sure it will be fine though as plan to be out and about most of the time. Will let you know how I get on.

Thanks for all your tips.
