I am taking my son to Amsterdam. I want to know what kind of activities for children can be fun for a boy of 10 years-old. We are Mexicans. Thank you.

If you want to see some windmills around Amsterdam, you can take a (bus)tour to Zaanse Schans to the North. Very nice, but very often crowded.
Just outside Amsterdam, to the South-East is the small fortified town of Weesp. There, they also have a couple of windmills in town, and more in the countryside around. 2 kms North of Weesp is another old fortified town, Muiden, with the Muiderslot-castle. A beautiful medieval castle and in school-vacations they have a lot of activities for children. Sword fighting demonstrations, falcon-hunting, etc Look on their site www.muiderslot.nl , in Dutch, but it speaks for itself. Don't know when you are coming this way, but for example next weekend (July 5, 2008), they have 2 different medieval enactment-groups. To give you an idea what it looks like: On saturday : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1stHwOjMe_0 On sunday : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9w_jf_UKd5M Best way to go to Weesp is by train. From Amsterdam Central Station in direction Hilversum/Amersfoort or Almere/Lelystad. It’s just 14 minutes, 4 trains per hour. Make sure you take a STOP-train, otherwise you can only wave while passing along Weesp. A suggestion, specially with a 10 year old. Why not rent bicycles at the station in Weesp (not expensive, but a caution is needed), visit the charming little town of Weesp and windmills, and cycle to Muiderslot-castle in Muiden. Or you can take the bus from station Weesp to Muiden, or walk these 2 kms of course. There’s more to see around there, if you want to spend half a day or so. You can find information on the these little old towns (Muiden, Weesp, Naarden) just outside Amsterdam on wikitravel, or browse on the internet and look for information on day trips around Amsterdam. Oh yes, windmill ‘Friendship’ on the river Vecht just outside the centre of Weesp is a real working flour-windmill, if there is wind of course. Open for visits (free) on Saturdays 10.00 – 14.00. Look for windmills in Weesp on www.weesperwieken.nl and www.weespermolens.org
