There are MANY types of cruises.
There are cruises to nowhere - usually just a couple of days where you never go to a port at all.
There are the Bermuda cruises where the ship goes from the US to Bermuda and stays in Bermuda for 3 or 4 days and then comes back to the US. There are also cruises that go to the Galapagos from Ecuador that do the same.
There are canal boat cruises where the boats only go about 5 miles a day
There are river cruises which are pretty much the same except with bigger boats
There are sailboat charters where you stay in the same geographic area (like the Virgin Islands) for the duration of the charter, but go to different places there. Some boats you pilot yourself and some you charter with a crew
There are - or used to be - freighters that you could ride along with them as they pick up and deliver cargo.
There are live-aboard scuba boats where you dive two or three times a day in a specified area
There are Antarctic cruises, there are whale watching cruises, there are cruises to Alaska, there are repositioning cruises and transatlantic cruises and Panama cruises and cruises for fall foliage.
And there are some regular cruises where the boat stays for more than one day in some of the ports, but other ports there won't be as much time. Except for the two I mentioned above, I don't know of any particular cruises that stay in a port for several days and then go to the next one for several days.
