Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Sardegna Should I hire a car in Sardinia?
Posted: Thu June 26, 2008 03:53 PM UTC
My girlfriend and i are heading to sardinia in the second week of august (i know - not the best time!)

We are staying in cala gonone for a week, and are wondering whether to hire a car. From what I have read most of the good beaches you have to travel to, so that is why we would get one. However, there is no hotel parking, should I worry about finding parking that time of year or the safety of the hirecar? Also, apparently you actually travel by boat to most beaches form Cala Gonone so maybe that is a better option?

Any advice would be much appreciated... :)

I never was in cala Gonone, but knowing how Sardinia's beaches and places to see are, I highly recommend a private mean of transportation, at least for a part of your stay.
I never went without.
However, given the high season, a scooter could be even better than a car. Much better!

Ciao
Francesco

Hi. I've been to Cala Gonone last year. It's the also the place chosen by climbers...
I suggest you to hire a car in Olbia so it would be easier for you to get there and to move around once there. August is not the best period but I don't think you'll have problems with parking (safety in sardinia is quite ok, maybe the problem would be to find a place when you move to visit beaches..)
I think car is necessary also because you can move and visit something "inside". I recommend you to reach "Gole di Gorropu" (long walking but fantastic!)and the village of Orgosolo.
Beaches you must visit: Cala Luna, Cala Goloritze
You can also take a day boat trip with "Nonno Pino" (ask to the harbour). The trip takes one day and they take you to 3/4 beaches and you have a simpatic lunch on the boat with fresh fish...

Have a nice journey!

I have just got back from Sardinia and was so glad I hired a car because you really won't see much without one. We booked on line with opodo for the 2 weeks and got a good deal. When we spoke to people who hired once they got there we realised how much cheaper it was the way we did it. They were being charged 100 euros a day for car in June so I imagine the price will go up a lot in August! It is quite a hilly country with lots of winding roads and so gear changing is frequent so you may want to consider an automatic for ease. Also be aware that overtaking is the norm and they will overtake any time any place any where. Hope you have a great time - we did.
