Posted: Wed June 25, 2008 06:12 PM UTC
We will arrive in Livorno at 7AM on Carnival Freedom. What is the fastest/most econimical way to get from Livorno Pier to Florence? We were thinking train. How much time from pier to train station? cost? we need to be back in ship by 630PM, at what tim edo you reccomend leaving Florence to make it back in time. Thanks

http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

will give you train times and fares (click 'buy' or cart icon) in English.

There are reasonably frequent trains, taking from 1h 22 mins upwards. One-way fare 6.30 euros. You could be in Florence by 9:30ish, if you get off the ship quickly.

I'd want to be back in Livorno by around 5pm, to allow for potential delays, but I'm always cautious (and cruise ships don't wait). There's a train at 15.27 (arriving 16.49): the next one (16:27) doesn't arrive till 17.49.

It's quite a walk to the station from the dock (depending on where your ship ties up), so you would do better to get a taxi (or a bus, if you have time).

When my ship docked in Livorno there were buses at the pier to take you into Livorno the cost was 1 euro. The bus does not go to the train station but the stop is not far from the bus route that would take you to the train station. The bus would be the number 17 and its about a 10 minute bus ride. In all it would take you about 20 minutes from the pier to the train station.
