Delhi Ganj river
Posted: Wed June 25, 2008 02:13 PM UTC
I couldn't figure out whichway the Ganj river runs. We would like to see Ganj and go by the shore. Which city or where is it that we see the steps going into the Ganj or where people to bath in Ganj? What city is it? We always see them in the movies.
If too far, is there a city close to Delhi that we can go and stay for day to see Ganj? We could do like a 7 hour train trip or so but longer.

Many thanks
Itir

If you mean the river ganges, then it is varanasi, old name benaras, also called kasi.you could go by train. Some parts of it are not clean.there are ofcourse many other temples that have a river running close by where people bathe.depends on which movie you saw and whether it is really ganges you want to see.it is the most sacred of our rivers and according to our beliefs it helps us overcome our sins and elevates us towards Godhead.
You could also visit Haridwar,Rishikesh which are closer to Delhi and are less crowded and cleaner and also are very holy.
Hope this helps,
Regards,

Well, the places suggested by my friend VTer are corect i.e u have two choices to fulfil ur wishes.

Option 1: GO to HARIDWAR/RISHIKESH
HARIDWAR & RISHIKESH are almost near to each other and it took around 6hrs bus journey from New Delhi Bus Stand (ISBT) to reach these places. Lots of govt. buses are available. Luxurious buses are also available.
Here u can take a holy dip in the river Ganga (Ganges) sort of ablusion & enjoy the beauty of the place.

Option 2: Go to Varanasi (Banaras/Kashi)
The oldest living city in the world envisages a famous lord shiva temple known as Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Apart from this, various other temples are also worth watching and ofcourse...river ganga is present at this place.
It is approximately 17hrs journey by train from New Delhi. Train name is Kashi Vishwanath Express. It starts at around 1330hrs and reaches Varanasi at around 0600hrs in the morning.

The only difference between river ganga at Haridwar and Varanasi is that in the earlier city river ganga enters from mountain where as in the other city is it almost the end of river i.e it gets merged in the ocean.

I hope this will be helpful. Further queries are welcome

Keep Smiling

you could also take a cab to Haridwar and Rishikesh from Delhi. It would be more convinient for your mobility in these places and you dont have to carry your luggage around.

Hi,

Ganges starts from Devprayag (the confluence point of two rivers: Alaknanda & Bhagirathi) which is 70 kms from Rishikesh... and flows down through Rishikesh, Haridwar....

You can catch a morning train from Delhi to Haridwar and then go by taxi to Devprayag (3 hours)... there are some hotels and guesthouses available.... it is a quite place not so touristic ...so could be interesting for you as it is also the starting point of Ganges...

After spending a day or two in Devprayag you can drive down to Rishikesh along the Ganges.... can stay one night in Rishikesh as it is also an interesting place... and the next day you can drive down to Haridwar (25 kms from Rishikesh)... see the people bathing in the Ganges at the place called 'Hari Ki Paudi'... do not miss the evening 'Aarti'.... and finally you can catch a train back to Delhi from Haridwar...

and it would be more interesting if you further go to Varanasi from Delhi (long train journey)... and you will be able to see how the Ganges is at the initial stage in Devprayag and how it is at a later stage in Varanasi... here also you will see a lot of people bathing at the banks of Ganges..
