Hi,
I did a bit of research and its advised that people who are travelling to Cambodia should take precautions about malaria. And yes, you should take medication that can prevent you from catching malaria.Try to use insect spary at all times and be sure to get travel insurance before you leave as medical costs must be paid up front if you ,for what ever reason, have to see a doctor.Hope this helps!Have a good time!, Jasmine :)

Malaria is prevalent in almost all of asia with the exception of china but that does not mean that an ordinary tourist is exposed to the danger. Take the usual precautions for avoiding mosquito bites and take care especially at dusk. the city areas are witout much risk and the malaris risk is always less at higher altitudes.
I have been to Vietnam and Cambodia about 15 times and I have never taken any malaria precautions, neither have i taken malaria precautions while travelling in India, malaysia or Burma.

I agree with Jasmine, if you are worried, you should take the precaution of antimalarials, there are mild medications which you could begin taking a week before and for six weeks later or take stronger medications during your stay.
Buena Suerte..

| Angkor Wat | Re: malaria tablets..and dengue Posted: Fri June 27, 2008 12:53 AM UTC
Hi John
I have been there 3 times and the locals dont seem to be worried about it. Depends to a degree whether you will be back to home country by end of incubation period as not a good plan but easier to treat when home. It is seasonal but there is a lot of dengue in Cambodia and they have had a lot of sick children with high mortality (thats why they like you to donate blood). So separate from taking any medication, wise to always apply anti-mosquito sprays if its dengue time. If I remember malaria mossies and dengue mossies bit at different times of day. Dengue a real problem if you have had it before in a different part of the world. japanese B encephalitis a dreadful disease but luckily very rare in short stays. I'd stay home and watch television! (nah...enjoy your trip)

Should not be a problem but the decision is up to you. Compared to places like Bali, I saw very few mosquitos and never got bitten and I ate with the locals away rom the typical tourist areas. All medical expert will disagree with me but I felt Malaria pills were not necessary. Good luck

I have being to asia on many occasions, took malaria pills with me the first time. Never since, the side effects from the pills were not worth it in my opinion.
Its ultimatley up to you, doctors will always tell you (or at least the ones I have visited) that no melaria pill is 100% effective, and the best defence against it is not to get bitten by a mosquito in the first place. Take some insect repellent and were a long sleved white shirt. Also angkor is a huge tourist attraction, you wont be getting of the beaten path at all, if Maleria was a problem everyone would know about it, and their would be signs everywhere advising you as such!
