| Copenhagen | Visit for a short day in Copenhagen July 15,2008 Tuesday Posted: Wed June 25, 2008 07:54 AM UTC
Hello Everyone, hope you can help. The two of us are on a cruise. We are "docked" on the 15th of July. The cruise ship tours are way out of our budget & until I found this site, was considering buying the "CARD" to get around. I am only in "town" from 9 am to 3pm . Any suggestions? This may be my only chance to see Copenhagen. Its taken me forever to save for this chance. I would like to see the various "points of interests" you have listed ie: Little Mermaid, the Canal trip on the N..? opps I forgot name, forgive me. & the palaces. Don't get me wrong, living in 4 rooms, I know my home is my castle but what you people have there, is beauty in still life. I totally look forward to this visit! Thanks for all help in advance!Blue

the canal trip will get you to many of the main sights in an hour, so that is a good idea.
i would also suggest that you give yourself a couple of hours to stroll up through the pedestrian street. copenhagen is not so much a city of great sights. it´s more a city with a good vibe and a very pleasant city center. you might want to vivit the royal castle too (amalienborg) which is very close to the cruise ships. the changing of the guards is at 12 noon.

You can "do" Copenhagen simply by walking off your ship and away from the Quay because the cruise ships dock so close to many of the sights.
We stopped there on a cruise just for the day a couple of years after spending 4 days there. That first time it rained most of the time so we did bus tours and museums. I felt I had a much better view and feel of the city on that one day walking around with a street plan and guide. The ships usually give out a local plan or guide to all passengers but I would read the Copenhagen Pages on VT and buy yourself a Pocket Guide to Copenhagen - Berlitz, Collins - something that will slip in your pocket but packs a lot of information - including street maps.

I agree with my colleagues cachaseiro and ranger49 about the vibe. However, I would suggest that you squeeze in a trip to Round Tower. This is a centuries- old round building, around 110 (11 stories) feet tall, still offering fine views of the "vertically-challenged" city. Not only that, the "floor" is, simply put, one long continuous uneven brick ramp from ground level to the top! It was used to drag telescopes up to the observation tower decades before Otis came along. I have never heard of another building like this. I was just there 2 weeks ago, and I believe admission is a nominal 5 Euro. There is also a large art gallery (no extra admission) which was exhibiting African art. Even an antiquated (non-functional) toilet, next door to a modern, functioning one! This is just north of Stroget, maybe a 25 minute walk from the Little Mermaid. WATCH OUT FOR THE BIKE RIDERS!!

To "feel" Copenhagen start in Nyhavn (especially if it is a sunny day). The take a stroll through Strøget - the World's longest pedestrian street. If you have time, visit Tivoli.
If you like, you can learn more about Strøget and other places in my blog: http://www.CopenhagenInsider.com.
