Glacier National Park Looking for a glacier
Posted: Tue June 24, 2008 11:28 PM UTC
A friend of mine told me about a really cool hike that begins with a ferry across a lake, then a hike past several glacial lakes and ending at a glacier. I can't find anything like that on the maps of Glacier Nat'l Park. Does this sound familiar to anyone? If not, could anyone point me to a hike that would get me to a glacier in the park?

That sounds a lot like the Crypt Lake Trail, in Waterton Lakes National Park, which borders Glacier NP, Montana, but Waterton NP is on the Canadian side of the park, in Alberta. The two parks together form the Waterton Glacier International Peace Park.

Another thing to note is that there are actually 2 parks called Glacier NP, the one in Montana, and another one in British Columbia, Canada, near Golden, BC. There are a number of hikes in the Canadian GNP which would take you past glaciers and glacial lakes, but none of them would also include a boat ride.

The Crypt Lake hike in Waterton NP begins with a boat ride across Upper Waterton Lake to the trail head. The trail then climbs 2200 feet in elevation over the course of a 5.5 mile hike, ending at Crypt Lake. You pass numerous rivers and waterfalls along the way.

There are pictures from this hike on my Waterton Lakes NP page, if you'd like to take a look.

In Glacier Park, the best glacier hikes start at the swiftcurrent picnic area off Many Glacier Rd. One ten mile round trip goes to Grimel Glacier, the other of about equal length goes to iceberg lake. Those are the top glaciers in the park, unfortunately, they are small, and soon will be gone. If you really want to see glaciers go north to the icefield highway in Canadian rockies. Now those are glaciers

Hi Jenny, it could be the Waterton hiker that I was talking about. Each time we visited the area we took in the U.S. and Canada sides. If you check out my home page (Stephanb in members) you can see a picture of Patty and I on the hike with one of the lakes in the backround. Possibly somebody can narrow the search with the photo.
