| Athens | Changing of the guard? Posted: Tue June 24, 2008 10:42 PM UTC
In relation to the Parthenon, where is the imperial palace where the changing of the guard takes place? At what time does this happen, and does it happen every day? Thanks.

Look at this map: http://www.athensguide.com/map/athens.htm
The ceremonial Changing of the Guard happens every Sunday at 11:00 AM at the Tomb (Monument) of the Unknown Soldier at the Parliament Building in the area just uphill from the Syntagma Square Metro Station (Syntagmatos Sq.), in the northwest corner of the National Gardens. "In relation to the Parthenon": If you're actually at the Parthenon that's about a 3/4 hour's walk in a northeasterly direction.

The presidential mansion was once the King's palace, but I don't think you should promote him to emperor! The ceremony takes place at the tomb of the unknown soldier, in front of the Parliament on one side of Syntagma square, so nowhere near the Parthenon (although there is also a flag-raising ceremony every Sunday at the Acropolis). It does happen every day - I think it may even be every hour - I saw it by chance around 6 in the evening, but there is a more elaborate ceremony at 11 on Sunday mornings.
