| South America | South American Tour - December 2009 Posted: Tue June 24, 2008 08:03 PM UTC
Hi there, I am considering a tour across Latin America. My itinerary (at the moment) is: Brazil - Rio, Brazil / Argentina - Iguazu Falls, Paraguay - Asuncion, Bolivia - Sucre, La Paz & Lake Titicaca, Peru - Puno, Cusco & Machu Picchu, Peru - Lima.
I have seen this itinerary advertised with a company called Journey Latin America, who offer a 3 week package for £3693 leaving Dec 13th. Can anyone help me to make my first decision - take the easy way out and book the package, or, book a flight to Rio................... I look forward to hearing from you soon. |

At first blush the price seems rather dear. And would question the inclusion of Paraguay. What transport do they include for your intra South American travels? Bus, plane or combo? At that time it is high season for Rio but the rainy season in Peru which would make your visit to Machu Picchu less than optimal.
You might want to check pricing this out on your own and bypass Paraguay. Suerte SAM

That seems like a heart-stoppingly huge number for only 3 weeks. Money goes a long way in S.A. I've done lots of travelling in S.A. and I've done it all on my own (except the Inca Trail) with the help of a few guide books and with VT of course. Depending on what your goal are, I think you'd find a lot more flexibility and fun doing it on your own. However, if planning and researching isn't your bag, then go for the tour.

Spent 4 months (single female) in SA for less than that - and I started off with almost no Spanish - you learn quickly on the Gringo Trail! Be brave - book a flight and sit down and get your head in a few good books and plan exactly what you want. Rough Guide, Lonely Planet, Footprints (surprisingly good!)... Just always be a step ahead of your travels so when you arrive at some dodgy bus station at all hours you can use the opportunity to book your onward ticket... The freedom of travelling on your own is truly priceless x
