Laos Private guide or driver in Laos
Posted: Tue June 24, 2008 04:46 PM UTC
Hi. Only have chance to spend 5 or 6 days in Laos and wonder if anywone has the email address or mobile number of a guide or driver in Laos. Have been to Luang Prabang before and trekked in the hills but a bit more time constrained this time. Might fly into Luang Prabang and maybe out of Vientiane or maybe out of Luang Prabang. Alternatively might leave out of Pakse but not sure if have time to easily get from LP to Pakse. Any assistance appreciated. or name of a small tour company which will do individual tours for two. Anyone know if easy to rock up and hire a boat for a couple of days in either LUang Prabang or down around Pakse. I appreciate all your help.

Try flying LP to Pakse, I guess you might need to change planes in Vientiane, but surely faster than driving it all, although I heard the road from V. to Pakse is good now.

Sorry can't help with the car driver. I always used public transportation for the long haul in Laos (boat from Houayxay to LP, bus to Vang Vieng and on to V., plane from V. to Pakse), but rented mopeds to get around locally, cheap and much more flexible than a car with a driver. I do recommend Pakse, Champasak and Si Pan Don (Don Det, Don Khon, none of the other islands). I did all this in 3 days on a moped rented in Pakse, at the Lankam Hotel. I had a GPS but there are not so many roads down there so with a decent guide book and a few times asking you should be able to find it all, too.
You need to take a ferry to get to Champasak, and back to drive further south to Si Pan Don. If you've seen Angkor then Champasak is probably not worth the visit because it's the same style, only much less. Of course it also receives far far less visitors, and this adds to the atmosphere of the place.
