| Cancún | Oasis Cancun Posted: Mon June 23, 2008 09:31 PM UTC
Hi, I am planning to stay at the Oasis Cancun in July. I have read some negative reviews, unfortunately this is the only resort available in my price range. Has anyone stayed here recently?
I have a few questions. . . Is room service included in the all-inclusive plan? Are there blowdryers and irons in the room? Any information will help. Thanks!! |

Sorry, I have not stayed at this resort - but your post made me curious, so I read one hour!!! reviews on a German hotel review website. Unfortunately only people age 19 to 25 think it is a good hotel for partying into the early morning hours. As you travel in July you will not be there during the Springbreak which is obviously nightmarish due to the invasion of 24/7 drunken teens and twens. Another big point of critic are the waiting times at the restaurants which are up to 1 hour, and the food often cold. Obviously the hotel has 1600 rooms, that explains a lot. Mini bars are not filled up without request.
The recommendation of those disappointed people was to upgrade to the Grand Hotel Oasis which is on the same compound. They say restaurant access is much better and the service better - but not before handing over generous tips. I wonder why you do not book a hotel in the Mexican part of Cancun, or go to Playa del Carmen, Isla Mujeres, or just another really Mexican place. Accommodation would be cheaper, and food is cheap in Mexico. I have not been there lately but I am sure several people on VT could help you with up-to-date accommodation tips.

there was no young crowds when i was there.
most people were in their 30´s and it was very dominated by american lower middle class males.

I support Claus (Cachaseiro), Playa del carmen is prettier. But to decide "which place is better than the other" depends on your personal preferences and what you plan to do during your vacations.... do you want to go there ONLY to lie down by the beach zipping a drink all day long and maybe do some water sports?? You can do that in either place and I would choose Playa over Cancun for that. Do you want to go partying every night and visit expensive and fancy shopping malls? That you won't find in Playa and the nightlife there is much quieter than it is in Cancun, so then it wouldn't probably meet your expectations. Do you want to go sightseeing -- let's say visit Tulum, Xcaret, take a ferry to Cozumel...?? You can also do that from Playa del carmen, you don't need to be based in Cancun to go to these places although tours might be a bit cheaper if they depart from Cancun. Playa is a small town, with some restaurants, bars and shops, but rather quiet. I certainly prefer this so I would pick Playa over Cancun (and not only during springbreak), but that's me. There's another great place in this area called ISLA HOLBOX which you might want to check out, they have cheap accomodation + all inclusive there and I've heard it's a dream-like place, isolated and beautiful. Haven't been there myself but I do plan to visit it some time. So I guess it pretty much depends on your taste and plans what the best destination would be. Good luck.

It is already some years since I stayed in Playa del Carmen but then it was a really lovely place. Some big hotels but not over the top, and still a lot of smaller hotels right on the beach, and the town was nice, and surely had some nightlife - but not party day and night.
On my first trip to Mexico I had planned to go to Cancun because I only wanted to relax on the beach. Lucky me I had only booked the flight. When I saw the hotel lagoon from the air I was so shocked that I changed my plan immediately, took a taxi to the port and a boat to Isla Mujeres... I later went to see friends who stayed at one of the huge lagoon hotels in Cancun - and wondered why you bother going to Mexico if you only meet Americans and pay with American dollars... I do not know the small place the last poster mentioned but would surely check it out. I would just make sure it is not too far away from everything if you want to visit Chichen Itza etc. and need transportation. Strategically Cancun, of course, is a great location. BTW Springbreak seems to be in February/March.

Thanks for all the information. It looks like the oasis will be full the time I am traveling, so I think I will stay in playa del carmen. I was looking at sandos aracol, but will check out the other place mentioned. I am looking for relaxing on the beach, sightseeing, as well as some nightlife. It looks as if playa del carmen will suit all those needs, and I do plan to travel to Cancun as we are renting a car.
Thanks for the insight!

I stayed there years ago, did not like it as much as the Flamingo hotel in Cancun,( all inclusive )we go often. No waiting at restaurants or little. Book a suite and then upgrade to ocean view superior for $20.00 US. Good food ( better then Oasis). For your first time I would suggest cancun for you can travel to all surrounding places. Check out the hotel on my VT site. Same price range.
