Where would be a good place to base yourself from to discover the region? Can anyone suggest any fairly large summer cabins/apartments to do so?

If you could let us know if you are planning to travel around in Hordaland by car or by public transport. And if there is something special that you allready know you want to see, that would help us giving you better advice :)

Yes, the region is rather big, and the ideal spot would vary depending on if you want to discover the coastal or fjord or mountain areas. There are thousands of island that take a long time to discover, and there are vast mountain areas.

Probably public transport, and fjords are of particular interest.
We would want to be close enough to Bergen.

Near Bergen is Lone camping by a lake.
Then you have the Hardangerfjord with Kinsarvik camping by the fjord. About 2,5 hours drive from Bergen. I think you need to reserve in good time both places www.lonecamping.no www.kinsarvikcamping.no
