| Sorrento | Best location to stay..... Posted: Sun June 22, 2008 09:00 PM UTC
Hi,
I'm getting very confused looking at hotels that say they're in the centre in Sorrento and then reading reviews that say they were miles out. I've looked at loads of maps and can't work out what the best place to stay would be.... I'm spending 6 nights in Sorrento with my sister. We won't have a car so priorities are: 1.Walking distance of good bars, restaurants etc 2. Walking distance of public transport If anyone has any recommendations of cheapish hotels in the centre that would be great too. Thanks for your help, Annie |

Hi Annie
My friends and I are going to Sorrento in September for a week following a week in Ravello. Like you we won't have public transport so want to be within walking distance of the bars and restaurants - After a lot of searching we chose a hotel called Hotel City Sorrento - frm what we can gather it is situated 1 min frm the Piazzo Tasso which is in the centre of Sorrento.- www.hotelcitysorrento.com. Im not sure what yur budget is - this is a fairly basic cheap hotel - but the previus week we are in Ravello and are blowing the budget hotelwise so need to balance it out in Sorrento. Hope this helps.

Hello Annie. We just spent a few days in Sorrento and couldn't find a place we liked in the center of town so settled for a hotel on the hill overlooking the town and the bay with a bus stop right outside the door. The hotel even sells bus tickets. It was very reasonable and the view from our terrace over the bay was nothing short of spectacular. We took the bus to Sorrento, Amalfi and Positano and could easily have gone to Naples or Pompei if we had time.
The hotel is Villa Fiorita and here is the web site. http://www.albergovillafiorita.com/english/index.html You can check it on Venere.com or TripAdvisor.com They also have free wifi which was very useful to us. There is a very nice pool overlooking Sorrento and the bay. The staff speak Engish for the most part and everyone was very kind and helpful. The rooms are clean and comfortable but on the small side although we certainly had plenty of room for the two of us and our luggage. You might want to look at it even though it's up the hill and not central.

I consider the Hotel Savoia to be a real find, at the cheaper end of the hotel market (no pool or anything like that).
5 minutes from the main square (and from the bus station/Circumvesuviana train), pristine rooms, quiet area, perfectly safe. Very pleasant and helpful owners, brilliant breakfast (including eggs or even pancakes sometimes!). I booked theough www.venere.com (you can read guest reviews there) but the hotel website (in English) is http://www.savoia-hotel.com/public/sito/EN/default.asp I shall definitely stay there again. Wherever you choose, do make sure it is very near the centre of Sorrento (preferably within 5/10 minutes walk of the Piazza Tasso, the main square). Ferries/hydrofoils to the islands, buses to Amalfi/Positano and the Circumvesuviana to all the historical sites all go from that area.

We had a wonderful week at the end of February, staying at the Hotel Mignon Meuble, which I thoroughly recommend. Like Leics' hotel, it is at the budget end of the market. Our room in Feburary was Euro35 per night for a double, a huge ensuite room, with fabulous views over an orange grove, plus French doors onto a patio, absolutely spotlessly clean, excellent breakfast (fruit, etc. but no pancakes!). It is very centrally located but quiet. Couldn't ask for a better location. Very friendly and helpful staff. We booked through www.booking.com I don't know when you are going but in February we were just ahead of the tourist season and quite a few of the restaurants were closed but there were enough open to give us a choice. I should imagine that Sorrento is pretty hectic at the height of the season and the prices of hotels will also accordingly reflect the demand. For restaurants and day trips and so on, have a look at my Sorrento, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Naples pages, and also those of Leics.
