| Dubai | Tips for young U.S. women traveling to Dubai Posted: Sat June 21, 2008 09:16 PM UTC
My sister and I are in our 20's and traveling to Dubai mid August into September. I'm concerned about our safety and what things we should do or avoid (i.e., desert excursions, rules for women's dress, locations to avoid)... Does anyone have any tip/recommendations for us?

Hello from Dubai :-)
I'm a 27 year-old German female, and have lived in the United Arab Emirates for the past 10 years. This is still one of the safest countries in the world, but of course there *is* crime and of course one should always exercie caution and common sense. Copy & paste this link for dress code: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tp/12ef50/ Copy & paste this link to read WHY this is important: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tp/12d4c2/ Common rules & regulations: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tp/137842/ There aren't really any locations to avoid. Of course, like any city, there are the nice and the slightly "dodgy/shadey" parts of town, but nothing seriously criminal. Please only use metred taxis (there have been rare cases of taxi drivers driving lone female passengers into the desert and raped them.) So exercise caution and don't leave each other alone, especially late at night. I've even had a taxi driver try to take me another (wrong) way one night when he noticed I was drunk. I immediately got onto the phone to a friend and told her (loud and clear) "I'm in this taxi, the number is bla-bla-bla, I'm now on this road, going here and there." My final advice: don't be too friendly to men, especially the Arab and Asian men (no offence to anyone, but this is fact). Smiling and talking to a man innocently can be very much misunderstood by them... Have a great time in our city. As I said: it's very safe, just don't be naive and exercise common sense like any woman should! Jess ('c',)

Oh, I have very often, Hamed, and most of them are now my friends :-)
But the problem is: usually one never meets the "decent" ones, because they are at work and at home, not causing trouble! :-)
