| Pisa | Leaning Tower - can you go inside it now ? Posted: Sat June 21, 2008 12:26 PM UTC
I understand that since about 1990, you have not been able to go inside the tower. But now the shoring-up of the foundations is complete. Is it possible to go inside the tower now ? If not, is there a date it is scheduled to be reopened ?

It's actually been open for a few years at this point. BTW, while there, try to visit the museum behind the tower. It's a fun museum and inside looking out, you get great views of the tower leaning. 8^)

"15 € in Sep '07 "
hahaha, it was 500 lire in the fall of 1972...about 85 cents US...and I had to borrow that to get into the tower, as I was broke at that point... This increase seems a little larger than the rate of inflation, huh? ;-)... but there was none of this timed ticket entry business in those days - you just walked up, paid your money, and climbed the stairs...life was simpler in those days (cue the violins)... I should add that I did not pay 15 €, just asked and decided not to pay that amount of money; as I was told, it was not worth it, but you have the right to choose on your own, it's just my point of view

Ah, I hear the violins, Bill.
Our first time in France we were in the Alps and decided to hop across the border to Italy, knowing absolutely nothing about it. We had no lira so decided to charge lunch to our credit card. The cheapest thing on the menu was 22,000 lira (yes, twenty-two thousand). We enjoyed a very nice lunch and had no idea what we had just paid. When we got our bill, the grand total was twelve dollars. Great exchange rate! That buys a starter today.

Well, it was definitely worth 500 lire!
Yes, in the deep dark past, we had very nice exchange rates...the best I had the pleasure of experiencing was 2,000 lire to the US dollar...I once noticed in the supermarket that of the bottled wines (many of which were brands that woudl be recognized in the US), not a single bottle was more than 2,000 lire, or $1USD...I'd better stop or I'll start boo-hooing for the good old days ;-) Bill

We climbed the Tower a couple of years ago, but be careful, it's sometimes difficult to just turn up and get a ticket because of numbers of tourists. You can book tickets online in advance though. Don't forget to go into the churches adjacent - they are fabulous !

Excellent advice Markporter. The entire Pze. Dei Miracoli is amazing and you should see as much of it as you can. The Baptistry doesn't take long, but the Camposanto is worth some time. The Duomo is overwhelming. It is so pristine white outside and then you go in to an absolute riot of color. Everything is painted or gilded, just magnificent. BTW, they close the Duomo for lunch so time your visit accordingly. The leaning tower is part of a wonderful ensemble of architecture and history. Enjoy your visit.

Thanks for the great replies, all. I didn't realize I would have to book it in advance, so that is very useful information !
