There is a regional train from Amalfi to Avellino with a change at Nocera Inferiore. The trip takes under two hours.
It would be quicker to take the bus. SITA has a weekday service Amalfi - Salerno then change bus - Avellino. In my experience, buses sometimes dont keep to timetables though. It would also be a pleasant drive if you have access to a car.

The info on the trenitalia website is a bit misleading - the town of Amalfi actually doesn't have any rail service...When you enter 'Amalfi' as a starting point for a rail solution, it changes it to 'Vietri Sul Mare-Amalfi'.
Vietri Sul Mare (where this rail station is) is practically in Salerno, so you will have to take the SITA bus from Amalfi to Vietri Sul Mare anyway, or better, just take the bus all the way to Salerno so you won't have to change trains (or less likely to). I am not sure, but I would expect the SITA bus to set you down near the train station in Salerno. Or you can just take the bus all the way (I didn't look that up)... Bill
