| Tallinn | One day in Tallinn during mid-Aug Posted: Fri June 20, 2008 03:38 AM UTC
Hello folks,
So I am gonna get just one day in Tallinn during mid of August. I learnt that its not such a big town and I should be able to make it in a day. Easiest option I thought was taking a city ride bus. I found two - City Tour - http://www.citytour.ee/index.php?id=426 and City Sightseeing - http://www.citysightseeing.ee/index.asp What I am not getting out of these two tours is, which one passes by more number of attractions and if they are worth it. I wish they could provide a map of places they pass by or something but couldn't find one. City Tour gives some highlights on their different 'lines' but nothing by the City Sightseeing service. Any comment from local VTer is most appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

I'm going to Tallinn in a few weeks, and it certainly isn't a big place. I don't intend to take either tour bus, to be honest. I intend to walk, and take ordinary public transport.
You may find that simply walking round the town (it's near enough to the port to do so) is sufficient. Have a look at http://www.tourism.tallinn.ee/ which has a city map & info on transport/sights etc The map will help you work out which route the sightseeing buses take. You might prefer the official walking/bus tour which starts from the port several times a day. Details on the bottom of this page: http://www.tourism.tallinn.ee/fpage/explore/sightseeing

This is certainly the best option but I have a company with bad knees. We are doubtful if he will make it with us all the way and we don't want to get stuck because of him so we thought of city ride as a best deal..
If I were alone, I would definitely walk, thats lot better than the bus ride, anytime..

I know that City Sightseeing has open top buses unlike the City Tour. As Leics said, the Old Town is really close to the port, and also pretty small, so it's well walkable. It seems that City Tour has more lines and the lines are also more extensive - 3 different lines for 15 euros. City Sightseeing seems to have only one line, but I might be mistaken here. Ticket is slightly cheaper.

Hi,
If you take bus tour you will miss one thing - Tallinn itself. The best thing here is Old Town - medieval part of our place. And it's almost closed for transport - for tour buses definitely. It takes walk only. And it's small enough to be seen in few hours. If somebody can't walk a lot - take them to Town Hall Square and leave to sit on one of numerous terraces sipping a drink. It's worth it.

Hello!
I reccomend you the City Tour bus (don't mess up with the other red two-stories tour-bus, look for CITY TOUR sign). Sity tour bus has three different roads - red, blue, green. I have taken the red line, which was quite nice. Got an good overview of Tallinn history and a brief overview of the old town. In the bus you'll also get headphones, whre you can hear all the information of the places you visit. I haven't taken the blue or a green line. Has anyone been on green or blue line? How is it?

Thats exactly what I was looking for. The City Tour has less frequency and to me it looks like, it will be difficult to do all three lines in 6 hours trip. (i.e. 11.00 to 17.00 hrs)
I wonder if anybody who is well versed with tallinn can tell which is the best line to take?

Tallinn is not huge, and none of the tours will go anywhere near the historic centre (because it's largely pedestrianised).
Sadly, you won't see the really interesting/pictureque bits from any of the tours. Take the red line, to see it from a distance, and the green line (if you have time) to see some of the out-of-the-centre sights. The Blue Line will be pretty boring unless you get off and visit the wonderful Open-Air museum or the zoo.
