by subway from JFK to the Bronx is a looooong trip since most of the subways in the Bronx are local trains with seemingly innumerable stops. Four hours seems long, but if the motel is on the periphery of the Bronx, it could go close to three hours.
Allowing three hours or so to leave Manhattan, get to the airport, check in and go through security, he will have to leave Manhattan no later than say 5-5:30 PM. Suggest getting a subway map and marking the sites of interest on it in order to figure out the best way to use the system to get around. It may be difficult to visit all the places on the list, especially the Statue of Liberty, in the allowed time frame.
