| Athens | One day in Athens! Posted: Thu June 19, 2008 05:55 PM UTC
Could someone help out. We will be in Athens for a day off a cruise ship. What would you recommend to see and do? I believe we are there from 7:00am to 6:00pm.
We would like to see the Parthenon etc. Is it easy to get from the cruise ship to the Parthenon and the area surrounding it. I have heard that the area around it has some nice shops and restaurants, etc. How do I get from the ship to that area? Taxi? Metro? Bus? Train? I have read somewhere you can walk to the metro from the docks and then from there it is pretty easy to get to the Acropolis. Are there any really nice areas where there are shops, restaurants, etc. outside of the Acropolis area? Within reach? |

I assume your cruise ship docks at Piraeus, it's very easy to get to Athens from there, take the taxi or walk to the metro station, get off at Monastiraki for Acropolis. Plaka is the area where there are shops and restaurants. Look at my Piraeus page under transportation tip to Athens. Have fun in Athens.

It's very easy!! You take the train/metro from Piraeus to Thissío or next stop Monastiráki.From here you can walk up to the Acropolis. Around it is the Plaka area, where you will find shops, restaurants etc. You can buy a combined ticket at the Acrópolis, to visit also the ancient and roman agorá.
see also www.athensinfoguide.com for info on sights and openinghours. have a good stay!! maria

The cruise ship docks are about 1/3 mile from the Metro Station. Take the Green Line train into the Monastiraki Metro Station and you'll be very close to the Acropolis/Parthenon and the Plaka district below, where all the shops and restaurants you mentioned are located. Outside the Plaka the best shopping is in the Kolonaki Square area, about a mile from the Monastiraki Metro Station.

If you are interested in shopping, the Plaka is very close to the Acropolis. But one of the highlights of my visit in Athens was the National Archaelogical Museum of Athens. Accessible by metro, you'll just have to walk a few blocks.
Enjoy your visit!
