Visa entry - Zanzibar island

Is it possible to get your visa on entry at Zanzibar island?
I am flying direct from Johannesburg to Zanzibar (not via Dar).
Has anyone done this before?
I am getting mixed messages from the Tanzanian High Commission as well as from other travellers.

I ask myself the same thing, I m leaving tomorrow, did you buy it at the airport? how is zanzibar,can you recommend me something

Hi... just returned (25 Oct).... I'm from Namibia... was told to get my visa at the airport in Zanzibar....

giggles --- was met by 20 men in blue shirts, behind a small glass window, passing the passport from one to another... finally one decided that I need to pay the 50US$ for a visa... which I was prepared for and handed over... then his senior got hold of my passport, went to a list... noted Namibia... and handed my 50 US back... so... Yes... I got my visa for free at the airport in Zanzibar. (guess it must be something about SADC - not sure though)... the official message was - USD 50 at airport will be the norm.... so to play safe.. I would advise all travellers to have the 50 US$ ready.
