Santa Marta de Ortigueira Travel Forum

I will be flying into Santiago to visit my grandmother's place of birth in Barbantes, Ourense and then traveling to Ortigueira my grandfather's birth place, I need to know about roads between the two and where should I look for records of births and deaths in Ortigueira, I guess I will be driving or can I use train service?
Can anyone help?

It's easy to get to Ortigueira by train or bus.

By train, you take Renfe from Santiago to Ferrol. In Ferrol you take Feve towards Ribadeo and get off in Ortigueira. Very nice ride. If you take a morning train it's likely you don't get a long layover in between trains.

To return if in the afternoon, may want to take the bus. The train schedules end up with a big layover.

The bus and the train stations are side by side.

Ortigueira is perflectly walkable.

Thanks for the information, I am planning to stay in Ortigueira for a few days and will look for a hotel. Just got back for visiting my maternal grandparents birth place in La Palma in the Canary Island.

You are fortunate to have them. On my mother's side, both of her Dad's parents are from the Canary Islands. I was named after Santa Marta de Ortigueira - for some reason I actually cried when the train crossed into Galicia!

Oh, by the way, in the Turismo portion of the link they list the hotels. Ortigueira is a very small place!

My grandparents have all passed away and I really wanted to see the places where they were born. My maternal grandparents are burried in Cuba and it was great to hear the same terms we used in Cuba and know where they came from. My paternal grandfather died in Ortigueira so I will try to find his burial place.
