Gibraltar Fish & chips
Posted: Wed June 18, 2008 08:47 PM UTC
Here's a novel question for Gibraltar! We go often to southern Spain, and then often take a short trip to Gibraltar just to stroll about and have some fish & chips. Any suggestion to where we can get the best?

I had Haddock & Chips once along the main street. Have to admit i couldn't remember the name of the place but it was lovely. After a search i'm sure this must be the place: Smith’s Fish & Chips
295 Main Street, Gibraltar
Tel: 74254

A traditional British fish and chip shop with tables/seating available or take-away wrapped in newspaper.

Menu: Cod, haddock or plaice in batter, Cornish pasties, mushy peas etc. Also curries, omlettes and burgers. Open: 8am - 6pm Monday - Friday. Breakfasts from 8am.

Located: Main Street opposite the Convent.

Have fun & don't forget the cigarettes..

I agree with Ghosthunter, the one opposite the Convent is probably the best. There is another one which is also quite good in Casemates just beside Burger King, I think its the same owner, but the one in The Convent is better.

I have only been to Gibraltar once, and the place where we ate was in a plaza next to the building with the two cannons. There were actually two fish and chip places across each other - we did *not* go to Roy's (got some bad "vibes" from the sidewalk) ... we went to the place in the other side of the building with the cannons.

I am very fish and chip deprived so I would be a bad judge of wether it was the best - it was along the bus route and the restaurant had a nice outise areas with tables with dark green umbrellas with beer names in them - should be easy to get there. Very clean. I do remember they were extremely attentive, and made my husband a special salad with tuna that was not on the menu. Excellent service. And I loved my fish and chips.

I had to look at my photos - yes, it's the Governor's house, by the side where the cannons are.

My husband was beginning to show symptoms of his illness (similar to Parkinson's) - and before we ate he had gotten ill in the cave and we had to get a taxi to get back to town. Luckily I had asked his brother to travel with us ... but bottom line, I was not able to pay too much attention to where we were. We did have a great day in Gibr., that happened towards the end.

I really did like the place and the awesome service.

Why not get away from the centre and visit the Seawave Restaurant on the picturesque Catalan Bay village. I prefer this area as it has a decent beach and the Seawave is more a homely type of place and has friendly staff; just can't remember the name of the Moroccan guy who's the main man there.
This is the quiet side of Gibraltar and you can view the Mediterranean Sea from the outdoor eating area.

Good idea! I have never been on that side. What bus goes there? I always park on the spanish side and walk or take the bus in. Then I always check the marina for any long distance sailboats, as I'm a sailor myself

Sounds beautiful! Actually, this is what I loved doing - sitting there watching the water run thru the strait. Wondering how anyone in their right mind, way back when, went over the edge of the world ...

The bus which goes to Catalan Bay (on Sir Herbert Miles Road) is the Number 4 and operates every 20 minutes on weekdays or 30 and 45 minutes on Saturdays and Sundays respectively, the link for the timetable is shown below.

The service starting times vary (from about 7am) and the last bus is at 9pm but the does stop on Main Street so not far to go once you have crossed the border.

There are also several other bars & eateries in the Bay area but not much else luckilly, that's why I like it there.

From this point I also saw Morocco illuminated in the evenings, although I was leaning over the balcony of my room at the Caleta hotel at the time; I got very excited and was looking forward to my first ever journey over to Tangier from Gibraltar.

You mentioned parking in La Linea; I don't suppose you know of apartments for rental there do you?

Bye
