Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Madrid Should I travel to Madrid on Public Holiday???
Posted: Wed June 18, 2008 12:08 PM UTC
Hi, was going to travel to Madrid from 14th until 16th AUGUST, but have just read that it is a public holiday on the 15th (assumption day)
I've read that the town could be quite deserted.
Can anyone tell me if its worth travelling there at that time of year.
Many Thanks
ayben

It all depsnds on what you want to do; museums will be open and less people in the streets. On the other hand, August usually is hot, but with this "new climate..."

August is the usual holidays time for spaniards, and to madrilians, particularly. However, since a 3-4 years time, the city is not deserted at all in August, because more and more people just cannot go out on holidays, or because tourists really live the town.

August 15th in Madrid is the equivalent to the British Bank holidays, so museums and leisure facilities are open (Zoo, Parque de atracciones, Faunia, etc) but banks and shops in non touristic areas will close, and services (including public transport) will work on a reduced schedule.

Restaurants in the city centre-tourist areas will work normally

Take into account that in Madrid, every August there are more people than the August before, the times when Madrid was deserted went away!
