| Prague | Old Town vs. Lesser Town? Posted: Wed June 18, 2008 01:07 AM UTC
I will be staying in Prague for three days at the end of August and am researching hotels. What is better old town or lesser town? I only have three days so I want to be located in a safe area that is easy to get to everything. I don't care about room service just looking for a standard room with a nice staff. Any suggestions?

There are no "unsafe" parts of Prague and so anywhere is as good as anywhere. If on a budget then perhaps the Mala Strana would have better deals and of course everywhere is easily accessible by the tram and metro. I'll leave you to do your own research.

I would not fix my choice to one of them - just look what is on offer. Old city and Mala Strana are safe all the same. Old City is more in the middle of "everything" so it is easier to get to the place of your choice, more of restaurants, cafes and noisy nightlife. Mala Strana is more "outside" of shopping and entertainment zone. In both Old City and Mala Strana you can find nice reasonable accommodation and overpriced tourist traps. Old City is bigger, so there are more hotels awilable.

Any place you stay that is near a metro station or important tram line is easy to get to. The expensive hotels in the touristed areas that you mentioned just want you to believe that they offer you something better.

i just returned from prague and there really is no difference between the two. lesser town and the old quarter will be the most expensive places to stay and eat in prague. central prague is very safe for tourists, the only problem is pickpockets. i would suggest new town (nove mesto) for a better value for hotels and restaurants. the sites of interest to tourists are not far away by walking, subway, or tram in central prague. the only place to avoid is the area around the train station. prague is a beautiful city, you will enjoy it. doug48

Hi Both are just as good and you can easily get to most places on the public transport trams, bus & train. We purchased a 3 day transport pass, very cheap and saves the legs. Have a look at the hotel we stayed in great value Hotel St Jana, web sddress on my page.
Good Luck, Mike

I stayed in the lesser town last September and found it to be convenient, pleasant, quiet and safe.
Our hotel was the Hotel Atos (Excellent) and if you look-up where that is located (Melnicka) you will see that it was round the corner from the tram stops, a short walk to the Charles Bridge and Legions Bridge and near the Kampa which makes for a pleasant walk back in the evening or during the day. There were bars and restauarants around although we tended to eat in the old town and stop off for a nightcap near the hotel. We do lots of walking so we thought that everywhere was fairly close-by. We walked to the funicular railway, went up to the tower and house of mirrors, before walking on to the castle. In the evenings, the restaurants around that side of the bridge were lively and good value.
